UEFA has explained that there was no chip on the ball used in the decision to deny Julian Alvarez’s penalty against Real Madrid; instead, it was decided solely through VAR intervention.

Argentina World Cup-winning striker Julian Alvarez repaid Atletico Madrid in a fiery Champions League shootout at Metropolitano Stadium. His shot crossed the line despite slipping out of his control. But after a review by VAR, the goal was ruled out, leaving everyone in controversy.

The analysis showed that Alvarez had double touched the ball. His standing foot had made contact with the ball before his right foot hooked the ball into the net. The offense led to the referee calling off the goal, which handed Real Madrid a boost as Fede Valverde was ready to shoot.

Real Madrid’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, said he notified the referee about the double touch. “I sensed that Alvarez touched the ball twice and informed the referee. It’s difficult to spot, and it’s unfortunate for them,” Courtois remarked. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid’s coach, Diego Simeone, was visibly frustrated. “I’ve never seen VAR being called to review a penalty in a shootout. Did anyone in the stadium witness him touching the ball twice? Please, come forward and raise your hand!” he exclaimed.

Early replays of the incident were indecisive, and Atletico’s frustration grew. But a behind-the-goal footage confirmed Alvarez’s left foot had inadvertently touched the ball as he slipped.

There were also speculations that the decision was facilitated by a chip inside the ball. FIFA and UEFA have also employed this technology during World Cup and European Championship matches. UEFA emphasized that the decision was strictly video-based and that the Champions League ball is not equipped with a chip.

A dramatic shootout already was further dramatized by the situation. Real Madrid ultimately won and made it to the quarterfinals, while the hopes of Atletico Madrid were shattered through the controversial call.
